The Jaded Jungle

Duli

You take the right path, thinking that ending up near the mountains must be cool. You find yourself on a path that is quite straight and wide. You can almost see to the end of it.

Far ahead of you, you see a distant figure that would probably be quite large if you were close. You can hear hooves. Perhaps this is another centaur? You also hear multiple voices, and you wonder if there are more of them. As you get closer, you see that this is a male centaur, and he appears to be alone.

Once you get within speaking distance, however, you see that you are wrong. He is not alone. Actually, he has an entire train of animals, and they're all gibbering away at him.

"Can I go for a ride?"

"My feet hurt!"

"Are we there yet?"

You can tell he has seen you for some time, and he stops about thirty feet from you, as if to consider going into the jungle. He turns to his train and says, "You can all get on my back, and hold on." Is he going to run?

He steps towards you, and when he comes into view you can see four faces peering over at you from behind his back.

You introduce yourself, and he nods along with it. As you explain how you've gotten here, the four creatures on his back chirp and cheer, as if they've never heard such a spledid story.

"Some of us," says the loud centaur's voice, "don't trust strangers."

The silence billows, and even the small pack of animals with him don't speak.

He sighs, "I suspect if you've gotten this far, I cannot complain about how safe you are. But one can never be too careful." He shakes his head and steps off the path. Instantly, all the brambles pull back to reveal an openning in the wall. He steps into the clearing, and as the wall closes he says, "Good luck, wanderer."
